Welcome
A Message from Dean Dennis "Skip" Parks,
Cal Poly Continuing Education & University Outreach
Welcome to Summer Term 2010 at Cal Poly
Summer term is taking on a new look at Cal Poly. The most significant change is that due to California’s declining support for higher education, the California State University has mandated a reduction in the number of students Cal Poly can accommodate with state resources. Therefore, in order to minimize the impact in the rest of the academic year, summer term 2010 is transitioning to a self-support model.
At Cal Poly and other campuses of the California State University, continuing and extended education colleges and units provide the financial mechanism by which instructional programs can be offered in a financial self-support model. As we implement this transition, one of the primary goals is to minimize changes in the established ways students register for classes and pay registration fees.
A second change for Summer Term 2010 is that Cal Poly is being more strategic in the selection of courses to be offered. By doing an analysis of registration patterns and an examination of students’ programs of study, greater emphasis is being placed on courses most needed by students. These courses include those in high demand with high waitlists and those that traditionally present barriers for students as they make progress toward degree completion.
A third area of emphasis for Summer Term 2010 is offering courses most needed by students who are near the end of their programs of study. It is envisioned that many courses needed by these students will be offered in Summer Term 2010, thus allowing them to complete their degrees.
Fourthly, as a result of an analysis of registration patterns and student interest, Summer Term 2010 will consist of two sessions; one five week session and one eight week session. Both sessions will start on Monday, June 21, 2010. Registration begins April 22, 2010.
